Electrical Panel Buzzing or Hot?

A quiet hum can be normal. Crackling, heat or a smell is not

Panel crackling, hot or smoking? Stay back — call 911 if there's smoke, then call us.

Quick answer

A panel should be quiet and cool. Buzzing, sizzling or crackling, or a panel cover or breaker that feels hot, usually means a failing breaker or a loose, overheating connection. Xlectrical's licensed electricians (Florida License EC 13014052) answer 24/7 from Sunrise and serve all of Broward County. The emergency service call is $299 and is applied toward the repair.

Fire, smoke or someone shocked? Call 911 first. Whole street dark? Report it to FPL at 1-800-4OUTAGE.

Do this right now

  1. Don't open the panel cover or touch breakers that are hot, buzzing or discolored.
  2. If there's smoke or flames, leave the house and call 911.
  3. If it's only noise or warmth, reduce the load: turn off the AC, dryer, water heater and other large appliances.
  4. If you can safely reach the main breaker and it's not hot, you can switch it OFF.
  5. Call 754-289-8993 — we're available 24/7.

What the noise means

  • A faint, steady hum from the panel can be normal, especially with large loads running.
  • A louder buzz from one breaker usually means that breaker is failing or isn't seated tightly on the bus bar.
  • Sizzling, crackling or popping is arcing — electricity jumping across a loose or burned connection. It's an emergency.
  • A hot cover, a warm breaker or a burning smell means something inside is overheating.

Common causes in Broward homes

  • Loose lugs on the main breaker or service conductors, often after years of heat cycling from AC loads.
  • Breakers that are worn out, overloaded or the wrong type for the panel.
  • Aluminum feeders or branch circuits with connections that weren't treated or torqued correctly.
  • Corrosion inside exterior panels near the coast or after water intrusion.
  • Older Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels that many insurers and inspectors flag. See FPE and Zinsco panels.

What we do

  1. Use a thermal camera and meter to find the hot breaker or connection without guesswork.
  2. Make it safe — shut off and isolate the affected circuits, or the service if needed.
  3. Replace failed breakers, clean or replace damaged bus sections and lugs, and torque connections to spec.
  4. If the panel itself is damaged or unsafe, quote a replacement in writing — most panel replacements run $1,600–$4,800.

Repair or replace?

One bad breaker in a sound panel is a repair. Burned bus bars, melted breakers, heavy corrosion or a panel brand known for problems usually mean replacement. We show you what we found and give you both options in writing. Learn more about panel upgrades.

What it costs

The emergency service call is $299, applied toward the repair when you approve it. See our price list for breaker and panel pricing.

FAQ

Buzzing or Hot Electrical Panel: FAQ

Is it normal for an electrical panel to hum?

A faint, steady hum under heavy load can be normal. A loud buzz from one breaker, crackling or popping is not — it usually means a failing breaker or arcing connection.

Why is my breaker box warm?

Overloaded circuits, a failing breaker or a loose connection can heat the panel. A panel that's warm to the touch should be checked promptly; if it's hot or smells, call right away.

Can I tighten the breakers myself?

No. The panel has energized parts even with the main off, and connections must be torqued to spec. This is a job for a licensed electrician.

Does a buzzing panel mean I need a new one?

Not always. Often it's one breaker or connection. If the bus bar is burned or the panel is a known problem brand, replacement is the safer option.
