Why Smoke Alarms Must Be Replaced Every 10 Years

Smoke alarms don't last forever. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends replacing every smoke alarm 10 years after its date of manufacture — even if it still beeps when you press the test button. Here's why that rule matters for South Florida homes, and how to know when yours are due.

Why 10 years?

Most home smoke alarms use sensors that slowly lose sensitivity with age. Dust, humidity and heat — all common in Florida homes — speed up that decline. After about a decade, an alarm may react later than it should, or not at all, even though the test button still produces a sound. The test button checks the horn and battery; it doesn't fully prove the sensor can still detect smoke quickly.

The risks of keeping expired alarms

  • Slower warning: a few extra minutes of smoke before the alarm sounds can make escape much harder, especially at night.
  • More false alarms: aging sensors are more likely to trigger from cooking or shower steam — which tempts people to pull the battery.
  • Broken interconnection: in homes with hardwired, interconnected alarms, one failing unit can affect how the whole system responds.

How to check the age of your alarms

Take each alarm down and look at the label on the back. You'll find a date of manufacture — count 10 years from that date, not from the day it was installed. No date at all usually means the alarm is well past its service life.

5 signs your alarms are due for replacement

1. Yellowing or discoloration

Plastic housings that turn yellow signal chemical breakdown from heat and UV exposure. If your alarms look aged, they probably are.

2. Persistent chirping

A chirp every 30–60 seconds — even after changing the battery — usually means the sensor itself is failing, not just the power source.

3. Failure to respond to monthly tests

Press the test button each month. A weak, delayed or silent response indicates worn-out electronics.

4. Frequent false alarms

Constant nuisance alerts with no smoke or steam suggest the sensor is out of calibration. Modern alarms with improved sensing cut down on false alarms.

5. Alarms over 10 years old

Check the manufacture date on the back. Once a unit reaches ten years, it has outlived its reliable service life — whether you live in Weston, Fort Lauderdale or anywhere in Broward County.

DIY or a licensed electrician?

A single battery-only alarm is an easy swap. Hardwired alarms are different: they connect to a 120-volt circuit and are usually interconnected, so replacement units must be compatible and correctly wired. A licensed electrician can replace them with current, code-compliant models — including sealed 10-year battery backups and combination smoke/CO alarms — and confirm every unit sounds together.

Add a Whole Home Safety Inspection

When we replace alarms, we can also check the rest of your electrical system from the meter to the outlets. Xlectrical's Whole Home Safety Inspection is $199 and covers the panel, wiring, outlets, surge protection and your alarms — a simple way to find hidden hazards before they become emergencies.

How to maintain new alarms

  • Test every alarm once a month.
  • Replace batteries at least once a year on units that use replaceable batteries.
  • Vacuum the vents gently every six months to remove dust.
  • Write the replacement date on the alarm so you know when it's due again.
